Fifteen NC State undergraduates assisted Dr. Vicky Thayer (NC Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator) with a necropsy of a subadult female bottlenose dolphin that stranded last weekin Emerald Isle. The necropsy took place on May 16 at the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST). The Field Investigations of Coastal Processes students who took part included some students who had assisted with previous marine mammal necropsies (former Semester at CMAST students), and some for whom the experience was a first. The dolphin had evidence of infectious disease. Examination of histology samples by a pathologist may shed light on why this animal stranded.
