Peru sits on the northwestern coast of South America just south of the equator. It is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia. This geographic location places Peru at the center of several unique ecological activities.

COASTAL UPWELLING creates a biological "gold mine." The upwelling off the coast of Peru produces a rich community for both fish and fishermen.

EL NINO is an anomalous event with global repercussions that originates in Peru.
