The Science House @ CMAST Summer Programs!

The Science House @ CMAST (TSH@CMAST) has a lot of programs going on this summer. Below, please check out a summary of what they have on deck:

Burroughs Wellcome Student Science Enrichment

Students who will be attending Morehead Middle School, Newport Middle School, and Pamlico Middle School are invited to participate in an exciting new program called Coastal Inquirers.

Students will begin their journey by attending summer camps which are being held in July and August followed by regular STEM club meetings during the school year where they will conduct science investigations, solve real problems and participate in STEM related competitions and activities. Coastal Connections Math and Science Partnership Grant

The Coastal Connections Math and Science Partnership Grant is a three year project that provides teachers with the knowledge and resources required to make “coastal connections” to their classrooms. Teachers attend a two week summer program (July 27 to August 7, 2015) followed by quarterly meetings where they network and develop lesson units and resources to use in the classroom.
This year, participating teachers will become certified Globe teachers and will receive credit in a new graduate level course MEA 591-601 Coastal Marine Sciences for K-12 Educators developed specifically to introduce K-12 teachers to the science of the coast.

Teachers in grades 5-9 from Jones, Onslow, Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico counties are invited to attend. We still have a few seats available. See this site for more information.

Earth Force Workshop

Scheduled for July 16, 2015

Professional development in the Earth Force Process, an inquiry and action-based instructional model that builds young people’s knowledge and civic skills. Local support helps educators connect to the community, creating hands-on learning experiences for youth. For more information about Earth Force go to the Earth Force website.

The cost of the workshop is $25 which will be paid at the door. Cash or check only.

Project WET

Project WET is an interdisciplinary water science and education program for formal and non-formal educators of K-12 students. The keystone of the Project WET program is the Project WET Curriculum & Activity Guide. The hands-on, supplemental activities are meaningful and relevant to children and are correlated to the 2013 North Carolina Essential Standards for Science, Social Studies and Health Education for Grades K-8 and for High School Earth/Environmental Science and Biology.

The Project WET Guide is only available through a 6-hour Project WET workshop. WET is a Criteria I workshop for the NC Environmental Education Certification and consists of 6 contact hours that may count toward CEUs for teachers.

The workshop will be held at CMAST on Saturday August 22nd from 9:00 to 4:00 pm
The cost is $25.00 which includes the new WET 2.0 guide

Sea Wolf Program

The Sea Wolf program is a 4H program for High School students who are interested in careers in environmental science, marine sciences and technology, communications, youth leadership, or just having fun.

The youth run program meets twice a month at CMAST and participates is science competitions, citizen science and service learning.

Our annual planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday August 19 from 9:00 to 5:00

All interested high school students are invited to attend.

The Bridge Downeast

TSH@CMAST Partners with The Bridge Down East 21st Century Learning Center to provide STEM Program support to middle grades students in the Down East area of Carteret County Schools. We will be working with the Bridge to provide STEM support over their summer program and hope to continue with weekly support for their STEM Programs over the school year.

Sustained STEM Support Partnership

Sustained STEM Support (S3) is a unique partnership between TSH and area school districts. As a partner, TSH provides a diverse set of services customized to meet the needs of the school system.

We are honored to announce that we are partnering with OCS during the 2015-2016 School year to provide STEM professional development, classroom support, Science Olympiad and Science Engineering Fair support and training and use of TSH equipment loan program.

Southeast Education Alliance

TSH@CMAST to conduct professional development workshops for the Southeastern Education Alliance this fall!.
In our effort to extend services and training to teachers and students on the coast

TSH@CMAST is partnering with SEA to provide a series of workshops to help teachers develop new strategies and lessons for introducing hands on STEM activities in their classroom.

More details will be provide by SEA and in our fall newsletter.

Project Learning Tree

Project Learing Tree’s newest module to be provided to middle and high school teachers on the coast.

Come join us on Saturday August 29th from 09:00 am to 4:00pm for training in the new Project Learning Tree Southeastern Forests and Climate Change module. Teachers will recieve 1 CEU and curriculum materials. There is no cost for this workshop!
