Marine Science at NC State – Extension
Coastal and Marine Science programs at NC State University have a long tradition of developing relevant solutions for real-world problems. From providing the necessary science to support effective fisheries management, to value-added seafood products, to best management practices for ensuring healthy water quality, NC State’s Coastal and Marine Science programs are helping people, animals and the environment at local, national and global scales to sustain and improve quality of life.
Some of the many ways our programs are helping to maintain healthy and economically vibrant coastal communities:
- Rescuing stranded marine mammals and sea turtles
- Protecting and restoring important coastal habitats such as seagrasses, salt marshes and oyster reefs
- Effectively managing fisheries such as blue crab and finfish
- Improving water quality
- Maintaining healthy beaches
- Helping brand and market local seafood products
- Maintaining the health of animals in the NC Aquarium System and Topsail Island Sea Turtle Hospital
- Forecasting hurricane tracks and storm surge
- Testing sources of alternative energy
